When you have a baby, you need a baby monitor. When you have the baby asleep in the crib, you don’t have to keep constantly checking to make sure that he/she is all right when you have a baby monitor. You have one part of the monitor in the nursery and the other in the same room of the house where you are. Every move and sound that the baby makes comes through the speaker so it is almost like you are in the same room.

Ideally, the monitors work best if they are within 10 feet of the baby. So you want them close, but not too close to your baby. You can carry the receiver with you during the day and plug it in by your bed at night. Basic features include an on/off switch and volume adjustor. You can also put batteries in the receiver instead of plugging it in every time.

Some of the monitors on the market have a light display that flashes to let you know when the baby is crying. This feature allows you to keep the volume down, but you’d have to keep looking at the monitor, though. Top of the line monitors have a camera (a video monitor) that you can attach to your VCR. This enables you to see your baby without being in the same room.

There are also disadvantages to using a baby monitor. If you use a cordless phone, the baby monitor can pick up your private conversations. Even talking in the same room as the baby will transfer the sound of your voice to the receiver, so you can’t complain about visitors that won’t go home. We once had neighbours who use the same baby monitors and same frequency as we did, and we could hear their night time routine if our monitor was on. And because they are electronic devices, you should keep them away form moisture.

Overall a baby monitor is a very useful thing to have. They give you a sense of comfort and let you get on with your day while your child is sleeping. But never forget that a baby monitor won’t be the same as being there for yourself. You should never leave your baby unattended for a very long time.
